THE JIST
So, this is something I'm really excited about and I feel I couldn't just make a regular bluesky post about it, and I need to let the world know dammit!
So this is huge, basically a big boy court wants to break up google's monopoly, This would mean google would be forced to give up ownership of chrome to another company, now normally all that juicy data would be to valuable to turn over so a bunch of for-profit tech companies naturally want it, sighs. But what if it didn't have to be that way what if it went to a non-profit that will not only use that data for good but also respect your privacy. Enter Ecosia, the search engine for trees.
If you haven't heard of ecosia before, it's a search engine and browser that uses the ad revenue form searches to fund environmental and social projects, mainly tree planting. They're a company I've been supporting for a long time as they're very transparent and very against greenwashing. Anyway, they recently sent an open letter to the court asking if they could take stewardship over chrome!
This would mean a bunch of things, firstly all that money generated from already existing chrome users would be put to fund tree plantings and other green projects, with chrome already making bank, imagine all that money going towards something good instead of shareholder pockets. Secondly is that ecosia mentions that they will put in a system to ONLY allow non-profits and social causes to take stewardship over chrome after the contract has expired. Thirdly is that all personal date will go back into that hands of the users. Ecosia is a privacy first company, they don't use personal people data, only advertising data, this means your data belongs to you and only you!
If the court decides that they will go through with this, it would mean a huge win for not only the environment but also the local communities ecosia works with in their projects. It would mean fresh water, electricity and a higher pay for lower income indigenous communities in the amazon. It would mean more habitat for critically endangered species. It would mean a huge change for the tech industry, and it would be a huge win for privacy.
So what I'm saying is GO SUPPORT ECOSIA AND GET THE WORD OUT!!!
that's all for now! have a great day/night to whoever is reading this and good luck Ecosia! I hope you win!
